It’s springtime and the azaleas are blooming which means the sand gnats are biting.. Just a few helpful hints to help us ward off these pesky little insects..
Where do they come from?? Breeding areas can be varied depending on particular species. Area with substantial salt marsh habit (us) are major producers of biting midge species.
What do they look like?? The adult no-see-ums are grey and less than 1/8 inch long. The two wings possess dense hairs. The mouthparts are well-developedwith cutting teeth adapted for blood-sucking in females and not in males.
What is the medical significance?? In the U.S , the biting midges are primarily a nuisance and the major medical issue associated with Culicoides is allergic reactions to the bites.
I will suggest a repellent containing DEET . It can be applied prior to exposure to the biting midges. I will leave the dryer sheets, skin-so-soft, citronella oil, etc remedies up to YOU.

Enjoy our beautiful spring weather,
